Dear walking book clubbers,
It was wonderful to be on Hampstead Heath with you yesterday. I am so bad at taking selfies, but I’m glad I managed to get the blue sky, and my book-cover-pink collar in the pic, as well as some of our smiling faces!
We had a brilliant discussion, and I’m looking forward to talking to more of you about the book TONIGHT at 8pm on Zoom.
Everyone is very welcome to join our 40-minute relaxed session this evening and don’t worry if you’ve not yet read By the Sea - feel free to tune in to discover more about my Black History Month pick, which is about an ageing asylum seeker from Zanzibar, rebuilding his life on Britain’s south coast, haunted by his past.
See you on Zoom: tonight at 8-8.40pm.
It’s helpful if you could book in via Eventbrite using the button above - that way you can pay and I get a better idea of numbers. But if you’d rather not, no sweat, here are the details to connect directly:

Next week, look out in your inbox for more links relating to our discussion of this month’s book, as well as my By the Sea webcast.

A Fortunate Man by John Berger & Jean Mohr
In this highly original, slim book, John Berger's words come together with Jean Mohr's photography to portray the life of a GP in the Forest of Dean in the 1960s. Through examples of common - and uncommon - cases, digressions into psychology, history and more, Berger and Mohr reveal the complex and unique role of a doctor in the community, and the sacrifice entailed.
Renowned writer and critic John Berger, and photographer Jean Mohr spent six weeks living with and shadowing their friend, Dr John Sassall, to create this extraordinary work in which pictures and text are in conversation. First published in 1967, this fascinating and poignant meditation on society, humanity, and the value of healing takes on new relevance today, given the current state of and debate around the NHS.
On the Heath: Sunday 13th November, 11.30-1pm, setting off from Daunt Books Hampstead, 51 South End Road, NW3 2QB
On Zoom: Monday 14th November, 8-8.40pm
Live Discussion Thread: Friday 25th November, 2-2.30pm
