Dear walking book clubbers,
Life; London; this moment of June. What a day! What a book! What a joy to see you on the Heath in all it’s splendour. It was funny to shelter from the sun under the same thick branches where we’d taken shelter from the storm the previous week.
Mrs Dalloway
Today is officially #DallowayDay. Hence the uncharacteristically speedy newsletter.
We all felt (deservedly) proud of ourselves for persevering with it in spite of feeling intimidated by Woolf’s formidable reputation and the book’s long labyrinthine sentences. For many of us, this was our first Virginia Woolf … and we loved it! Bring on more classics!
Thank you so much for the great discussions both on the Heath and on Zoom. I mentioned a couple of Virginia Woolf’s essays. Here are links to them both:
I hope you enjoy this month’s webcast. As ever, I’d love to know what you think if you’d like to leave a comment.
*** A reminder that these emails will always be free for those who need them to be, but if you are able to support Emily’s walking book club by subscribing for £20/year, or indeed for £50/year (which includes a bespoke literary consultation with me) then please do. ***
Our July walk
In July, we’ll be discussing Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai: a beautiful coming-of-age gay novel set against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan Civil War. I first came across this book at university, way back when, and can’t wait to revisit it with you - it really deserves a much wider audience.
This is our last walk of the season. We’ll meet again in September with a beautiful Autumn line up of books … more details coming soon.
Heath walk: Sunday 11th July, 11.30-1pm.
Zoom talk: Monday 12th July, 8-8.30pm.
Buy the book from Daunt’s and get 10% off: use the code WBC at checkout online, or tell them you’re in the group in the shops.
Look out for more details and useful links for Funny Boy in the next newsletter.
Happy reading!
Emily
