Dear walking book clubbers,
Our Out Stealing Horses events are THIS FRIDAY in Regent’s Park, Sunday on Hampstead Heath and next Monday evening on Zoom.
Here’s what some of you have said about our April book:
“One of the all time greats. Immense and almost silent, except when it’s not. Like a glacier.”
“Read it yesterday during my long flight and really enjoyed it. Thank you!”
Have you picked it up yet? How are you getting on? You can get a feel for the book from this month’s webcast, which I have managed to keep free of spoilers (no mean feat for this book). I read a bit out and discuss some of the ideas it raises, scroll down to watch.
You’ll also find in this email booking links for our April events, and a guess-the-titles photo of our next three books… All will be revealed soon!
I’m very sad to share with you the news that Lynne Reid Banks passed away on 4th April. It’s rather wonderful to think that we read her brilliant book The L-Shaped Room together in her final month of life. HERE is her obituary in the Guardian.

The April Webcast
I hope you enjoy this little chat about Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson, recorded early one morning in a shed in Devon - note my beach hair and lack of make up!
I read a bit out, and discuss a few of the themes that strike me about this book: the half-knowledge of adolescence, the trauma we carry within us, and the double narrative of life.
No spoilers here.
If you like the webcast, I’d be grateful if you could like or comment on it over on YouTube so the algorithm knows we matter and more people can discover our books and book club. In case you’d like to see more of these little videos, you can find them about all our books from the past few years on my YouTube channel: @emilyrhodeswriter.
Guess our next books…
The out-of-focus element really adds to the challenge! These are our next three books that I’m so excited to share with you. Can you guess the titles? Leave me a comment if so. All to be revealed soon…
Here are the dates for your diaries:
May Regent’s Park 17th | Hampstead Heath 19th | Zoom 20th
June Regent’s Park 21st | Hampstead Heath 23rd | Zoom 24th
July Regent’s Park 19th | Hampstead Heath 21st | Zoom 22nd
Hope to see you for our April events!
Happy guessing,
Emily
I've been thinking I need to read James Baldwin for a while - so this is going to be a great chance to read and discuss
I’d love it to be Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb. Not only because I love it but because it’s the only one I already have on my shelves!
