📚 🚶Tonight's Zoom: Mrs Bridge
Details for this evening's Zoom at 8-9pm, discussing this cult classic
Dear walking book clubbers,
It was wonderful to see you for our Regent’s Park and Hampstead Heath walks, and thanks to Rusana for the great photo with the amazing Nash terrace behind us. We are so lucky to have such beautiful spaces to walk in!
I was intrigued to note how many of us related to the character Mrs Bridge, and how uncomfortable that made many of us feel as we read it. Do we feel that as we laugh at and pity her, we are also laughing at and pitying ourselves? I also really loved how easily we shared our favourite moments from the book - and how many great moments there are! I can’t wait to discuss them all again (and more too, no doubt!) over Zoom this evening.
So if you missed our walks, and are curious to discover more about Mrs Bridge by Evan S Connell, please do join our Zoom this evening at 8-9pm.
Emily’s Zoom Book Club: Monday 14th October, 8-9pm, £1-15
Everyone is welcome, whether or not you’ve read the book.
Feel free to enjoy a glass of wine / bowl of pasta / some knitting etc. while you chat.

Looking forward to seeing you this evening!
In other news, and perhaps there is something Mrs Bridgey in this, you might enjoy THIS PIECE I wrote for the Spectator about my new love of kickboxing. (Though I very much doubt I’d ever be able to manage a fighting book club!)
Next week, look out for October’s On My Reading Radar, full of some great recommendations for more to read, watch and listen to.
November
The Past is Myself by Christabel Bielenberg
In 1934, a young English woman, Christabel Burton, married a German man, Peter Bielenberg, and adopted German citizenship, thinking that Hitler was a bad joke: ”I can assure you,” said Peter, “the Germans won’t be so stupid as to fall for that clown.” What follows is a compelling portrait of daily life in Nazi Germany for an Englishwoman who despised Hitler, while knowing that dissent meant death. She raises children, shelters from devastating Allied bombings, and pleads with the Gestapo to release her husband after he’s caught in a plot to bring down Hitler. This is a fascinating and unique perspective on life in Nazi Germany, which also raises important questions about what goes unsaid.
